We all have heard the statistics of how few entrepreneurs make it long term, but why are the numbers so low? I humbly feel that most people have no freakin clue what it truly takes to be an entrepreneur. So, what are the 3 ingredients that you won’t read about in any mainstream entrepreneur book that ever entrepreneur who has built a business that is sustainable long-term have?
It takes balls! (Yes, that goes for us ladies too!) You need to have huge balls to go against the mainstream need for a steady paycheck and security and be totally fine with the fact that there is a damn good chance you probably won’t get a paycheck for a few years. Yes, I said a few years! I have been an artist for 4 years, full time for the last 2, and I still have not received a paycheck! My bills get paid, I eat, and then every penny goes right back into making my business grow. I feel the only way to truly grow your business and thrive is to water and feed it for years, (invest money and time,) like you would water and feed a tiny seed to grow it into a huge tree from which you can pull fruit from its strong branches for a lifetime. Sacrifice now, reap limitless rewards later. 98% of people do not have the balls to sacrifice over the long term.
But Barbie I’m offended that you would write the word balls! Right and you won’t ever make it as an entrepreneur because the next ingredient is…
#1 MENTAL STRENGTH
For all you pussies out there that got offended because I wrote balls you will never make it! You need to have thick skin, and not just thick, super thick, to not let things bother you! You need to be able to take what you like from anything and leave the rest. You need to be able to hear NO NO NO and still think YES! You need to constantly look at your business with an open mind, see flaws, not get all butthurt, and make positive changes. You need to be brutally honest with yourself, if your business sucks and is not working you need to pivot to something that doesn’t suck, and not spend days or weeks in depression because you were wrong. You need to know like you know like you know that you will succeed no matter what it takes. You need to have strength of mind to work every damn day whether you feel like it or not. You need to have the strength of mind to shut the internal conversation off that says you will fail, you’re not good enough, you’re not smart enough, you’re not capable. 98% of people do not have the mental strength it takes to fall down and get back up over and over again until they finally can stand on their own, which usually takes years.
#1 RELENTLESS NEED TO GROW AND CHANGE
You need to be internally driven to gain knowledge. This does not mean casually reading self-help articles every now and then. This means an insatiable need to consume valuable knowledge daily, grow and change. Essentially your business is an extension of you, therefore a person who does not relentlessly grow themselves will never be able to grow a business that will survive long-term.
Did you notice all three ingredients were listed as #1? If I was to make them #2 and #3 you might get the false impression one ingredient was more important than the others. Each ingredient is vital if you are going to thrive as an entrepreneur.
I am so very proud of you for making it this far! It shows you do have the balls, mental strength, and relentless need to grow and change! You are a true entrepreneur in every sense of the word! So plant your seeds, water and feed them, and know like you know like you know that one day all your hard work will pay off and you will finally be able to sit in the cool shade of your big strong tree and eat fruit all day long while the other 98% of humanity is swearing at rush hour traffic to get to a job they hate for a dickhead boss who doesn’t even know they exist for a paycheck that is less than they feel they deserve.
